Christmas Songs, Carols & Music Lyrics

Lyrics and music notes about the Christmas song 'Jingle bells'

Jingle bells

(1857; aka "One Horse Open Sleigh" )

A plaque in Medford, Mass. pinpoints where James Pierpoint wrote one of the most famous songs ever for... Thanksgiving?
That's right!  "Jingle Bells" was originally written for Thanksgiving!
Pierpont wrote it for children in his Sunday School but it was so popular it was repeated at Christmas (and ever since!).

Jingle bells

Dashing through the snow
In a one-horse open sleigh
O'er the fields we go
Laughing all the way
Bells on bobtails ring
Making spirits bright
What fun it is to laugh and sing
A sleighing song tonight!

(chorus)

Jingle bells, jingle bells,
Jingle all the way;
Oh! what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh.
Jingle bells, jingle bells,
Jingle all the way;
Oh! what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh.

{chorus}

A day or two ago
I thought I'd take a ride
And soon, Miss Fanny Bright
Was seated by my side,
The horse was lean and lank
Misfortune seemed his lot
He got into a drifted bank
And then we got upsot.

{chorus}

A day or two ago,
The story I must tell
I went out on the snow,
And on my back I fell;
